The Gastronomic Weekends of Porto and Northern Portugal are a direct invitation to discover the destination through its gastronomy, with time, pleasure and curiosity. Driven by Tourism of Porto and North of Portugal, in collaboration with the municipalities, this initiative creates the ideal environment to enhance gastronomy and wines, promoting restaurants and tourist companies and bringing visitors closer to the authenticity of each region.
The municipality of Vila Nova de Cerveira once again highlights one of its most emblematic dishes – Debulho de Sável à Cerveirense – through two initiatives that combine gastronomy, culture, and tradition, complemented by the creative and colorful “Maias” route:
- From May 1 to 3, the “Fim de Semana Gastronómico” (Gastronomic Weekend) will take place, in partnership with Turismo do Porto e Norte de Portugal, the Municipal Council, and the Confraternity of Debulho de Sável à Cerveirense.
- On May 23 and 24, the 3rd edition of the event “Sabores com Tradição” will be held — a festive and family-oriented initiative organized by the Municipal Council and the Confraternity. During the event, the festival committees of S. Sebastião and S. Roque das Cortes will present different ways of tasting shad, also aiming to raise funds for their respective festivities. The program will also include traditional entertainment, with folk dance groups and cavaquinho ensembles.
More than just a typical dish, Debulho de Sável à Cerveirense represents the history and identity of the local community, closely linked to the fishing traditions of the Minho River. Its origin lies in the creativity of local women, who transformed less valued parts of the fish into a delicacy that is now a symbol of the municipality.
